Jean Rheem: “The Social Group”
Inspired by her experiences at an autism summer camp, Jean has produced two documentary films on autism in hopes of raising awareness. The Social Group is her second film about a group of teenagers with high functioning autism that has been meeting every Friday for the past 10 years. To gain insight into the world of autism as well as the idea of neurodiversity, her story is told through the voices of each member of the group. Ultimately, the film hopes to challenge our preconceived notions of what true friendship, happiness and love ought to look like—as revealed by the social group.
Jean Rheem, a native of South Korea, currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She has studied psychology, visual arts and documentary studies at Duke University as a pre-dental student.
