Caitlin Johnson: “Giving Duke Back its Soul”
Caitlin’s audio narrative revisits the dramatic culmination of racial tensions at Duke University following integration in 1963. Giving Duke Back Its Soul: The 1969 Allen Building Takeover uses oral histories, archival documents, and broadcasts from the WDBS student radio station to chronicle the occupation of the University’s Central Records Office by the Afro-American Society (AAS) in protest of the racial climate on campus.
Caitlin Johnson is a senior from Granada Hills, California. During her time at Duke University she has studied public policy, English and documentary studies. After being introduced to documentary work in a freshman seminar, she has devoted her time at CDS to photography and audio documentary forms.
